Okay ladies, let’s be honest, when was the last time you’ve really cleaned out your makeup bag? For some of you it may be 6 months, a few years, or maybe even when you first started wearing makeup. Yikes! Let’s hope some of you aren’t guilty of never cleaning out your makeup bag.

Trust me, I completely understand cleaning out your makeup every so and so months can be tedious; but between sharing your mascara with your girlfriends to touching and applying products with our fingers, you just got to. I’ll be the first one to admit, I don’t clean my makeup bag out like I should. However, if it gets to the point where things start to smell a little funky, it’s definitely time to give those products an Au Revoir! Besides, I would hope you wouldn’t want to paint your face with something smelly anyways. Totally gross!

Let me give you the low-down. The moment you open your new beauty product, it’s immediately subjected to many forms of bacteria. Okay so, small amounts of bacteria aren’t going to exactly kill you. But over time as the makeup ages, bacteria grows and becomes more dominant, causing the make-up to weaken. The composition of your products changes and turns into toxins, explaining the change in color or funky smell. When the active ingredients and stabilizers start to break down, it increases the risk of your makeup carrying an infection.

Now I know we all know the consequences of expired makeup, but allow me to reiterate. Bacteria developed in makeup can really mess up your skin, turning your face into a hot mess. Allow me to further paint this picture: irritation, acne, redness, protein buildup underneath the skin, boils, rashes, and it doesn’t stop there. As for expired eye makeup, it causes itchy, watery, red eyes, and in severe cases, conjunctivitis (pink eye). Essentially, you’re actively putting viruses on your face. You wouldn’t share a drink with someone who is sick, so don’t germ up your face.

Here are some tips to know exactly when you should toss or keep your makeup. If your makeup beings to separate, clump, dry out, smell bad, or look discolored, it’s time to give it a toss. First and foremost, dump out all your makeup onto a towel or something to cover the table. Then, divide and conquer by sorting mascaras, lipsticks, liquid foundation, powders, eyeshadow, etc; this way you can easily see if you have too much of like products. Some products have different shelf lives compared to others so refer to the make guide to see exactly when to say goodbye to a specific product.
